“Jelly Belly”

Recent research indicates that students need to be taught how to relax their body and mind. As a result, teaching “mindfulness” has become a trend. We do short activities that enhance a student’s awareness of their body, their breathing and calming tactics. Some students will fall asleep during this time. One of them is from a mindmasters program designed by CHEO and is called Jelly Belly. Students are to focus on deep belly breathing. Since we have done it several times, we added a new element. Students were to lie quietly with a jelly bean on their belly. If they are able to lie quietly for 4 minutes or so, watching the rise and fall of their jelly bean, then they got to eat it!
