Surprise guest

What a surprise! This morning when we came to school, one of our black swallowtail butterflies had come out of it's pupa stage and was fluttering around beautifully! I had expected them to overwinter in their pupa state. 

We got to look at him up close before letting him go.

He was pretty anxious to get going once we removed the lid!

"Bye bye butterfly"!

We still have 10 chrysalis left, but got to take a really close look at the shell of the chrysalis, and saw where it had come out.
