How our furry friends stay warm!

This week, we have brainstormed what animals do in order to stay warm in the winter. We’ve talked about hibernation, migration and how animals store food. The animals that live in the cold must have an adaptation in order to survive. We discussed how animals grow long hair, or even more or different kinds of feathers (the students aptly described it as “fluff”) and also how many animals in the cold develop a layer of fat in order to insulate their body. To demonstrate this, we brought some snow inside. The students put their hand in the snow and measured how long they could hold their bare hand in the snow.

Then they put their hand in a baggie double lined with cotton batting, or one which is double lined with lard. They then tried to measure how cold it felt on their hands.
