3, 2, 1...Lift Off

We had so much fun designing, making and blasting off rockets this afternoon. It was an optional activity made available to the senior kindergartens. We used old film canisters (I still have a few hanging around!), covered them with paper, some put fins on, some put a cone at the top, some added a hand drawn picture of themselves, some added a flag.

At the end of the day, everyone went outside and prepared for our rocket launch! In each film canister, I would put in 2 alka seltzer tablet and a bit of water. Eventually the tablets fizzed and created enough bubbles and pressure and the lid stays on the ground and the canister (and rocket) flies into the air.

We started with a few spectators and ended up with quite a gathering!

Just look at the excitement on their faces!
I love my job❤️

Sorting

As part of student’s mathematical development, they must learn that objects are different according to different attributes and they can be collected, grouped and organized according to theses similarities and differences. We have been talking about sorting objects, specifically buttons. We started by reading a book:
Each student was then given a small container of buttons, and asked to sort them, and then be able identify a sorting rule.
Logan sorted his by colour.

Nevya sorted her buttons according to size, small, medium and large!

Parker and Jouni both used colour.

Emery noticed different coloured buttons.

Connor found buttons that have 2, or 4 or no holes!

Chase is sorting the white buttons out.

Mylo is deciding what to do.
Hard at work!

Planets and Rocket ships

We are continuing our solar system theme. Collaboratively, the blue class made a solar system mural. Then the green class labelled and added the sun.
Everyone has completed a rocket (or is the process of), with a special astronaut peeking out the window!

In order to entice some reluctant writers, we have added “Space Station Security Badges”, as well as registration for space school. The students have had fun learning about what life is like in a zero gravity space station!

We have the numbers from ten to one to put in order for our rocket ship.

“Out if this world fun!”

This week, our classes have been busy learning about space. We have changed the dramatic arts centre to a rocket ship, in front of a (child made) mural of the solar system. We have been reading a variety of non fiction books about space, learned a new space song, used some different art techniques to create a “galaxy” background for rocket ships we have made.

Thanks Dylan for lending us your cool astronaut costume!

Writing about our space adventures!

Yummy...pancakes

Today, we made our own oatmeal/blueberry pancakes. We read a variety of  books about pancakes, then started measuring and mixing.

Once they were cooked, everyone got a chance to try it covered with fresh maple syrup.
Yum! There weren’t too many crumbs leftover!
