Shapes! Shapes! Shapes!

We got to explore a variety of shapes through some fun and interactive games!

Through a song, that the kids really enjoyed. "Do you know what Shape this is?"

Some students were eager to write their own shape stories!

A game of "Musical Shapes" with fun music and some dancing!
We also played a memory game with a variety of shapes inside a treasure box!

Here is a link to a song that your child might enjoy about shapes!

Surprise guest

What a surprise! This morning when we came to school, one of our black swallowtail butterflies had come out of it's pupa stage and was fluttering around beautifully! I had expected them to overwinter in their pupa state.
We got to look at him up close before letting him go.

He was pretty anxious to get going once we removed the lid!
"Bye bye butterfly"!
We still have 10 chrysalis left, but got to take a really close look at the shell of the chrysalis, and saw where it had come out.

Migrating Geese

We briefly discussed why everyone spotted so many geese flying at this point in the year. Someone was able to tell us that the geese were migrating. In the upcoming weeks, hopefully we will get the chance to investigate how animals and people prepare for the winter. We made some flying geese of our own!

We're Going on a Leaf Hunt

We read a book of the same title (loosely based on "Going on a Bear Hunt").
We then wandered through the forest in search of leaves in specific colours.
Students had to clip on the leaf once they found the correct colour.
We had to make a stop during our walk to pick "the talking flowers"! It is a wildflower similar to snapdragons that is called yellow toadflax. We like to pinch the sides of the flower, making it appear as if it is moving it's lips and talking!
What a wonderful way to spend Outdoor Learning Day! The junior kindergartens will get to experience this fun next week!

Yummy pumpkins

We have recently opened our pumpkins to discover what was inside. The students were encouraged to help us scoop out the pulp. It was great to hear what they thought of it: it was gooey, it was slippery, it was mushy, it was slimy.

We separated some of the seeds and we baked them. Wow, what a treat! For the most part, they loved them!
If you are interested, I baked them at 300 degrees for 40 minutes with a touch of butter and salt. It is an easy, nutritioustasty snack.
We then had a quick discussion about who liked them, and we graphed our results!

Senior kindergarten letter hunt

The senior kindergartens went into the forest on their letter hunt this week. We looked for the various hidden letters, found them, put the letters in alphabetical order, talked about the sounds each letter made, then played with the letters to see what words we could create.
