A Letter Hunt

The last 2 days we have read about all the antics the alphabet letters get up to in the story Chicka Chicka Boom Boom.
We then found out that the letters might have done something similar at Stonecrest, so we went to find some letters in our forest!

The JKs in the blue group found them all (up to M that is!)

Ah ah, missing letter H. It almost got away on us!

The JKs in the green group found them all as well, after trekking back in to find the H!!!
It was a lot of fun, I hope your JK child told you about it, the SKs will do a variation of this activity next week!

Busy day tomorrow!

Tomorrow, our students will participate with the school in the Terry Fox run. It will be held outdoors during the last 45 minutes of the day. Although we are not expected to run for the whole time, we will keep active and at least walk during the outdoor time. Should you wish to make a donation,Stonecrest  is set up to accept online donations. Please go to terry fox.org and search for our school's name.

Coincidently, tomorrow is orange shirt day and students are encouraged to wear an orange shirt to show that "every child matters"! This is an initiative of the First Nations, Metis and Inuit communities.

Smile....it's picture day!

Just a few quick shots to show you what  picture day looks like!
Ready to go to the gym, wearing our best smiles!

Fall investigation

We brought in some gourds and pumpkins for the students to investigate. They had fun looking at them, drawing them, some students even labelled their drawings! We'll continue to look at them, eventually weighing them, measuring them,  discussing where the flower grew from, where it was attached to the vine, why there are lines, etc. Eventually, we'll open them explore what is inside and cook the pumpkin and the seeds. I'd like to make pumpkin muffins in the next week or two, if anyone is willing to come in and help us bake, please let me know, we'd love some parent helpers!

Reminders

Say cheese! Just a reminder that this Thursday, the 29th is photo day! We will try to ensure the kinders go first, before all that mud, applesauce, play dough, etc, jumps up and dirties their nice, clean clothes!

On a different note, please visit our actual blog site, it is full of info and some of these updates within the extra tabs do not automatically go to your email once updated. There are play dough ideas and recipes (feel free to try them out and send them in, that'll save Ms. Byrne and I from doing it all year!), we try to share some of the "funnies" we hear in the classroom, there is a tab to reach the French blog, the monthly calendar and the kindergarten handbook. I have an important tab that gives parents information about our 4 parties throughout the year and lets you know which one I have signed you up for to send in snacks! Thank you!

Our Tree Named Steve

There were so few of our students here today, we collapsed the two classes into one. We read a story called Our Tree Named Steve. We then went on a walk in our forest with the idea that they were to choose a favourite tree and name it!
Chad with his tree.

Aden and his tree "Superman".
Feel the soft tamarack tree.
Mylo and his tree "Mario"!
Jaxon and his tree "Oreo".
Riley and her tree "Cupcake".
Even and his tree "Ewen".
Justyce and her tree "Elizabeth".

Seed Sort

On Thursday, the SKs in the green group took all their seeds that they had previously collected. We brainstormed for different ways that seeds could "travel". We then sorted the seeds accordingly.

Corbin found out how these seeds travel!!!!!

Most of our seeds could travel in the wind like dandelion, thistle and milkweed seeds, or be eaten or taken by animals such as acorn, pinecone or grass seeds, or stick to people or animals like burrs or hitchikers.

Interactive stories

We have been reading a variety of stories recently that are interactive and use props. Many of the children like to retell the story with the items to support the storyline. This is a valuable literacy activity as the students must attend to the story, understand character and follow a plot, demonstrating beginning, middle and end concepts. Be sure to ask your child about some of these stories! We read Robert Munsch's Smelly Socks, complete with socks.
We have read and acted out the Napping House which is a beautiful, gentle story that is rich in vocabulary about all the animals who are sleeping, except the wakeful flea!

We read The Little Mouse, the Red Ripe Strawberry and the big Hungry Bear, and everyone got to wear a disguise!
We have read Mouse Count, a story of a hungry snake and 10 tiny mice.
Some students even made their own paper tube snakes.
One of the mice. It was great to see so any students retell this story!
Probably one of our favorite books we've read is Mouse Paint!
Some lively little mice get into red, yellow and blue paint, then mix the paint to make green, purple and orange. The students LOVED listening to this story as told with mice and paint cans and were thrilled to see the mice change color as if by magic!!!
