Colours, colours everywhere

We’ve been talking about colour and how we mix some colours to make new colours. We started with one of my favourite books, “Mouse Paint”.

We’ve been completing surveys about favourite colour.

We’ve done some experiments.
We’ve been mixing the primary coloured paints to make secondary colours.

Circle Time with Mrs. Farrell

Circle Time with Mrs. Farrell

Every English day we split up into small groups Senior Kindergarten and
Junior Kindergarten students to learn and explore. While Mrs. Sonnenburg
takes half the students outside the other half of the students stay inside
and do a fun learning circle! We focus on learning many things and I try to
incorporate a fun way for the students to learn through games, songs, stories
and activities. We hope to do this in the near future on French days once we
get the students more comfortable with the second language.

This month the Junior Kindergartens have been focusing on recognizing their
first names, colours and capital letters. We have learnt a very loved song
called busy busy bumble bee which many students tell me they sing at home,
we have played a fun game called crocodile, crocodile down by the
lake and we have also played a game on a large shower curtain that
challenges the students to recognize letters at a quick speed!

This month the Senior Kindergartens have been focusing on recognizing
all the letters in their first name as well as we began to focus on their last
names. They have played the crocodile game which focused on capital
and lowercase letters and we recently began focusing on some simple
sight words. The senior kindergarten students especially love the challenge
on the shower curtain game and focused on capital/lowercase letters as
well as simple sight words.

At the end of each circle we read a story which this month included:

-Franklin Goes to School
-Pocket Full of Kisses
-The Very Hungry Caterpillar
-Alphabet Mystery
-Llama Llama Misses Mama

And as always, at the very end of circle the students get to pull “the popper”
which is a fun way to end as each student gets a chuckle out of the sound it
makes!

Seeds on the move

This week the senior Kindergartens have been focussing on seeds during their nature walk, specifically, how seeds move. We started by reading a book as well as their own mini book.

Then, we began hunting for a variety of seeds.

Next, we sorted the seeds, keeping in mind that some seeds blow in the wind, some rely on animals to disperse them, some float in water, some attach themselves to people and animals, some “explode”, etc.

Nature collecting

Our juniors must submit a collection of items found on a walk as an entry to the Carp Fair. We had fun picking out items, and gluing them to a paper plate in order to be submitted.
Picking up some milkweed fluff!

Getting some pinecones.

Now comes the hard part...choosing which treasure to include on our plate.

Butterflies

Many of our monarch butterflies have hatched this week, and students in each of the classes have got to watch the metamorphosis and helped to release them.
The last one still in caterpillar form.

The empty chrysalis cases are visible at the top.

Immediately after emerging, his wings are small and scrunched up!

Bye, bye Mr. Butterfly, safe trip to Mexico!

Terry Fox Run

What a beautiful day to participate in the Terry Fox run. It was held in the last hour of the day. As you can imagine, this is when our little ones are most tired! Combine that with the intense sun and heat, and we faded pretty fast! Nevertheless the students seemed to enjoy getting out there, seeing lots of “big kids” as well as our first opportunity to see Mr. Fox!

Returning to the shade of our kinder yard and enjoying a refereeing drink!

The junior Kindergartens go for a Nature Walk!

This week our juniors have gone for several nature walks. We started by brainstorming how they might describe a forest, then read the story, A Forest is Green. As we walked through the forest, we saw different things and then would use the words to describe our forest (i.e. soft, loud, prickly, crunchy, etc!)
The forest is yellow.

The forest is

The forest is soft.

The forest is prickly.

The forest is soft.

The forest is alive!

The forest is brown.
It is so much fun to have a purpose for our walks and have something small to focus our attention!
