The King of "ing"

Each day, we try to do some independent reading. The students are becoming familiar with some of those high frequency words, and are eager to point them out. Recently, we noticed students asking how to spell the "ing" sound (running, going, etc), and it is certainly a common sound in some of the books we read. We have challenged them to find the "ing" sound within their short, simple books. To celebrate that, we pronounce them as "the king of ing"! They are clamouring to find the sound within the books, and then get to briefly wear the crown. When reading at home, please encourage your little reader to become "the King of ing"!

Dance, dance dance!

Today was the first day of our dance lessons given by "Luv to Groove". The students had a blast, following the instructor as she led them through a variety of dances (playing all their favourite tunes), and role playing. Our lessons will continue throughout the week. If you have not yet sent in the dance fee($6),  it is not too late!
The letter "T" made impromptly  when the song was paused.

Help!

All the classes are busy preparing or next week's concert. The students have worked so hard learning their dances and songs, as well as completing beautiful pieces of art. We want to be able to showcase as much artwork as possible, making the gym look very festive. Tuesday afternoon, we were hoping for some parent volunteers to assist us to get the art mounted on the walls. If you are interested, please let either Melanie or Jodie  know by email or a quick note in the Note Tote. We are very appreciative of any time you might be able to give us.

Pizza ordering correction

Yesterday, information was sent home about Little Caesars Pizza fundraising opportunity. Unfortunately, an incorrect order code was given. The correct ID code that you will need to place an online order is: 299537. Sorry for the inconvenience.

A few more sight words

As mentioned earlier, we practice a variety of sight words on a regular basis. We make up a rhyme or chant to help emergent readers to read and spell those everyday, common words. Be sure to ask your child if they know these, and use them when reading to help your child identify them, or when your child is spelling. Here are a few more:
ME (we sing if to the tune of Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star)
YOU (sung to YMCA)
IN (sung to Hi Ho Hi Ho, it's off to work we go)

Hatching eggs

WE have set 14 eggs in the incubator. If everything turns out, our eggs should begin hatching the week of May 4th. Each day, some students go to the library, cross off the day on the calendar, and mist the eggs with water. Today, two boys suggested that when they went, they would bring clipboards for observations. They looked at a variety of books, and then drew the stages of the chick's development.
Young scientists at work.

They then presented their findings to the class.

Spring walk

On Friday, we took the class outdoors, to our favourite area, the forest! It was a lovely afternoon, however, we wanted the students to focus on smaller details. We read an alphabet book  first, then challenged the students to find all the letters of the alphabet with natural objects outdoors. Two students took out clipboards so that they might keep track of what letters we had found and photographed, and what letters we were still searching for. We found some very interesting items! It was amazing when we really looked, how we could find most letters!
Letter "C"
Letter "T"
We even stopped to listen to the spring peepers (frogs), who were singing...a true sign spring has finally arrived!
I will compile all our photos into a book. Ask your child to bring the class book home to share if you too would like to see it.

Hockey inquiry

Recently, there has been a lot of Sens pride shown as well as lots of fun activity playing mini sticks at recess. Throughout the winter, there was a general interest in hockey. With play offs approaching what better way to interest a variety of students? We have offered the opportunity to make their own hockey trading cards. Many of our students have expressed an interest in getting creative with this experience. They have to record various results, make their own hockey stick and have a photo taken.
They are very proud to show off the final results.
Other students have been busy painting various NHL jerseys or pictures of themselves.

Outdoor time

On Tuesday, we had the opportunity to go and enjoy the great outdoors. We had finally got some nice weather, and we discovered that even the creatures ventured out! We had so much fun exploring and investigating in the spring weather. We found centipedes, caterpillars, slugs, beetles and ladybugs.

Luv To Groove

We are eagerly anticipating the return of the "Luv to Groove" dance workshops at the end of April. We will participate as a class during the day during the week of April 27.  Cost of the program is $6.

Recognize these?

Before throwing these pairs of mitts in the vast box of lost and found items, we thought we'd check to see if anyone wished to claim them. If you recognize any, they'll be in the English room for the next week or so, please let us know!
