It’s maple syrup time!

A huge thank you to Paislee’s Dad who came to visit our classes to tell us about maple syrup making.
He told us a story about how a young native Canadian girl saw a squirrel nibbling the bark of the maple tree, then noticed “water” coming from the hole. Eventually, they began boiling this water and discovered the sweet substance we know as maple syrup.
He  told us that it takes 40 bottles of sap to make one bottle of syrup ( we will do a visual experiment with this next week).
These are an example of spigots used by maple syrup producers.
We got a little taste of the sweet sap.
Yum!
Next, we got to try some award winning maple syrup.
Good to the last drop!
Thanks to the Armstrong family!

Easter building challenge

We’ve issued a building challenge for the students. We’ve asked them how many eggs they can stack, with plastercine used as the mortar, to make a tall tower.

We then measure to see how high we built and record the number.

Decorating Easter eggs

With Easter festivities just around the corner, we’ve started some art activities. We did some shaving cream eggs that left the most amazing colours and designs.

We swirled paint into shaving cream.

Then we set the paper in it, patted it down and pulled the paper up.

We’ve used other items to make special designs.

Recess fun

With all the water in our yard, we had to find a new kind of fun! Teachers brought out some tinfoil, and they made their own boats to float.

Happy April Fools Day

Wow, April 1 already! We couldn’t allow the day to pass by without trying to pull a few pranks! We started off by pushing tissue into the toes of their shoes. There were many students wondering why their shoes no longer fit!
Once all the shoes had been picked up, we noticed something nasty had been left on the floor!
After we discovered it was plastic, we hid it amongst the shoes in red class!
At snack time, we opened up our lunch kits to discover there were some bugs! Ugh!
What is April fools day without tricking your teacher? “Mrs. Sonnenburg, would you like some brownies?”
Get it...brown E’s!!?
