We started off in the forest, looking at birds nests.
Next we were paired up according to what kind of bird we were....and we had to find our partner by listening for the matching bird call.
Together with our partner, we had to build a nest, keeping in mind that we had to hide it from predators and keep it camouflaged.
Each nest had to have eggs, and then they had to collect food for their imaginary “brood” of birds!
As they went to gather food, one person would need to stay behind in order to protect the nest from a fox. We were simulating the real struggles evident in nature.
After lunch, it was our time to do the pond study. Our leader showed us pictures of what we might find. They called them marsh monsters!
Then we went “fishing”!
We caught water tigers, tadpoles, water mites, larvae, snails, etc.
We played a game of life cycle tag.
Finally, we went in search of salamanders. By carefully turning over logs, we were successful in finding a red back salamander.
All in all, it was a pretty great day. A HUGE thank you to our many parent volunteers!
You will likely notice all of these photos are of the blue class. I will get some photos posted from the teachers of the red class.
