Herman the worm!

For students in the blue class, you may have heard of Herman the Worm. He is a simple sock puppet who grows after eating various suggested foods. At the end he returns to his ordinal size after burping! You can see why the kids love this song! Students in the blue class have designed and created their own “Hermans”, even suggesting what foods for him to eat and making the food so that he can consume it.
Look at the sampling of yummy food!

Egg Hunt

Since we do a countdown to our  eggs hatching, we’ve been talking about eggs, we had a discussion about what other animals lay eggs. They came up with some great ideas as to what animals lay eggs, including amphibians, reptiles, birds and insects. We then went on a nature walk in search of eggs. We found some ant eggs, some spider eggs, two nests, and a tent caterpillar nest. In the process, we collected numerous other creatures.
Are there frog’s eggs in there?

Famous Artist

We have started talking about famous artists, and chose to focus on the works of Edgar Degas. We have read a a variety of stories.
There is also some cute videos for young students about famous artists Art with Mati and Dada-Edgar Degas
As a background, we did some bubble painting (if your child came home with coloured freckles, that was why!).

They turned out beautifully. Now it was time to add our ballerinas, complete with coffee filter tutus.

Setting more eggs!

Since we had such success with our chick hatch, we have decided to try duck eggs. We have done this in previous years. Ducklings are more social creatures, and so much fun to watch. They do however take one more week to incubate, so 28 days. We talked about the incubator and how it worked and then set the eggs.
June 11 should be our lucky day...keep your fingers crossed!

The chicks came to visit!

Today our chicks came to the classroom for a visit. We covered the carpet with newspaper (a whole discussion about ALL animals poop!) and invited the blue class to join us. The students were so excited. There are now 10 chicks.

Happy 20th!

What a day!
We had a visit from Mr. Fox. It was an introduction to the mascot and a chance for our young students to see the costume and understand that he is nothing to be afraid of!
One of the kinders got to try on the head.

After the assembly, the red class participated in some team work, building a teeter totter! We had previously read a book called “Balancing Act”.
We worked to balance a board on a can, then try and find classroom objects that would balance.
The blue class got to decorate some sly fox masks!

Finally, we got to enjoy some delicious cupcakes contributed by some of our kind parents!
What an afternoon! Happy 20th anniversary Stonecrest!
Thank you to parents who sent in cupcakes and those who were able to come!

Hatching day

Our exciting day has arrived! When we got to school, there were pip marks in 6 of the eggs (pip marks are those first holes that the little chicks peck into their egg shells). By 10 o’clock, 2 had hatched.
We could hear the chicks peeping inside their eggs and when we touched the eggs, we could feel them moving!

By the end of the day, a total of 5 had hatched, and when I left, there were still 3 more in the process!
They were very tired after a hard day of work!
