Nature adventures

We went outdoors with a scavenger hunt! Students had to find numerous items. It was a great way for them to focus their attention.

They worked in small groups of two.

This week, the junior kindergartens have made their own binoculars and we went for a walk, searching for birds, bugs and butterflies.

The kissing hand

A favourite book to begin kindergarten with is “The Kissing Hand”. Some of you may be familiar with it.

It is such a beautiful story about a little character who is scared to go to school for the first day. We did some crafts, and talked about the story and their own feelings on the first day of school.

The junior kindergartens in the red group made a graph of how they felt on the first day!

Good to see that most people were excited!

Preparing for Carp Fair

Our classes have been busy making some crafts to be entered in the Carp Fair.

Bye bye butterflies

Our classroom butterflies got to fly away today. The students were very excited to wave to them as they went in their way!

Building the alphabet

Each day during the English class, I will take a smaller group of students outside to explore some element of nature ( one week, I will take all the senior kinders and the next week, the juniors will join me) . Early this week, our focus was on making an alphabet chart for our classroom using natural materials. We stareted off by reading a book called “Alberts Alphabet”.

The main character must build the alphabet and must get very creative with the materials used. 

We then went out to the forested area to collect our materials.

We then had to form the letters using the twigs, bark, etc.

Our alphabet is done and it is stunning and made by some special hands!

Fluttering friends

Some of you know that we were fortunate enough to have beautiful monarch chrysalis in our classroom. Before school had started, I had collected the caterpillars, then they magically turned into gorgeous chrysalis.

 We have been avidly watching them in the classroom, and they have turned from a lovely green with gold dots, to black, signalling the start of a the next part of their metamorphosis.

We now have 7 monarchs fluttering about.

Just hatched!

Nature is so amazing, we are waiting for warmer weather so we can release them!

If there is one piece of advice I could give every kinder parent, it would be to get a sharpie, and LABEL EVERYTHING! Do you have any idea how many similar Spider-Man water bottles there are! It may surprise some, but students also don’t recognize items that they have worn that morning, and with 25 kids, we can’t possibly keep track of who wears what!

Let me know if this looks familiar...no one recognized this by Friday afternoon, it was worn that morning!
