Signs of spring

We’ve been talking about the signs of spring that we’ve observed as of late. We went for a walk looking for some of these signs! 

The maple trees that are tapped are most definitely a sign!

The mud, puddles and melting snow and ice shows spring is just around the corner!

The pine cones are small, skinny and tight when they are cold, but once it warms up, they unfold and release the seeds!

We even found some green grass!

Shape detectives

The junior kindergarten students went on an “adventure” this week. Initially, it was due to the fact that it was raining, but I still wanted to do something fun with the smaller group. Each student was given his or her own pencil and clipboard and the paper had 4 shapes that they had to locate on our walk, then record on our sheet. 

They had so much fun finding all the shapes.

We looked everywhere !

We found lots of circles!

We located a few triangles!

Rectangles were everywhere!

Squares were pretty easy to find too!

Once we were finished, we looked at our charts and tried to figure out what we had seen the most of during our adventure!

Fire breathing dragons

As a craft this week, some students in the red class made some dragons. 

By blowing into the tube, it makes the illusion that the tissue paper is flame. 

Building challenges- boat builders

The blue group continue to explore modes of transportation. This week, we explored some ideas about boats and floating. We initially challenged the students to build a boat that would hold a marble. We set out a variety of materials such as pipe cleaners, plastercine, wooden popsicle sticks, lego, etc. We had limited success. 

We then watched a few videos that helped explain why boats float and how to build a tinfoil boat.

After watching the video, many students asked to use tinfoil, and formed them into a canoe shape. 

We were able to make boats that held many marbles.

Flying Dragons!

The red group has read several stories about fictitious castle character the dragon. Today, we made some flying dragons by colouring and decorating gluing and cutting. 

Eventually, it was time for flight! 

We measured and recorded each flight.
